Puppy and Kitten Healthcare in Jacksonville, Florida
Just as the needs of infants are different than those of teen-agers, animal babies need different care than their older counterparts. Because of their size, they are more susceptible to dehydration, parasites and other ailments than older pets. These conditions may cause discomfort in older animals. However, in young animals they can cause death.
If your pet whelps a litter of puppies or kittens, we suggest that you bring the babies in as soon as you can after their birth. If you observe a problem with a newborn or the mother, we need to see them immediately. Tail dockings and dewclaw removal for certain breeds are usually done at 3-5 days. Parasites can be especially harmful to younger pets and are often present at birth. We will begin parasite control at three weeks of age.
If you get a new puppy or kitten, it is best if your pet is at least 8 weeks old before you bring it home to ensure that it is weaned and can eat on its own. Your pet should receive a full physical exam by a veterinarian within a few days of coming to live with you. During that first exam we will assess the pet’s need for parasite control and set up a course of vaccinations. This usually involves a series of shots every three weeks until your pet is 16 weeks of age. We want to be a part of your pet’s life from the very start.
